This project was awarded to the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, University of Nevada, Reno (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno. It was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under Award Number G19AC00417. We thank John Brock and Kevin Gallagher of the USGS for securing funding for this project, Michael Marketti of the USGS for administrative support throughout the project, and Dave Soller for insights and implementation of the National Geologic Map Database. In addition to the co-editors of this report (Richard Berg and James Faulds), several individuals provided valuable guidance for this study by serving on the steering committee, including Rich Bernknopf, Steve Masterman, John Parrish, David Spears, and Nick Tew. John Parrish also provided constructive reviews of several chapters that significantly improved the report. We greatly appreciate Eli Mlawsky of the NBMG for organizing the nearly 4,800 responses to the stakeholder questionnaire, including the many narrative answers, into one massive spreadsheet that greatly facilitated data analysis. Eli also organized the cost sheets from the State Geological Surveys and the USGS. Thanks to the efforts of Margo Regier, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine who organized an ad hoc meeting of experts that provided individual expert opinions on the preliminary report. Individual participants’ responses and feedback on the preliminary report were provided orally. Invited experts included Yusuke Kuyawama, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Tim Haab, The Ohio State University; John Whitehead, Appalachian State University; Øystein Nordgulen, Geological Survey of Norway; David Schofield, British Geological Survey; Vanessa Bateman, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Krystle Pelham, New Hampshire Department of Transportation; Katherine Ensor, Rice University; Suparna Das, Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality. Although the experts provided many comments and suggestions, they were not asked to provide written reviews of the report, nor to endorse its methods or conclusions. Thanks also go to Sayali Mohite and Jack Marshall, University of Illinois students, who helped develop the initial search for data collection and then data organization. A special thanks is extended to all of the State Geological Surveys who provided cost and geological map download, view, and sales data, as well as disseminated the ~81,000 questionnaires to their stakeholders. Finally, we thank Kathy Henry of the Illinois State Geological Survey for assisting with stakeholder identification, Christina Clack of the NBMG for layout/typesetting of the review copy of the report, and John P. Rasanen and Brenna Tobler of the American Geosciences Institute for final copy editing and publication.
